The Battery Controlled: The Hidden Danger of Button Batteries

Childproofing is something that parents usually take very seriously.  We cover our electrical outlets, use doorknob covers, put up baby gates, and make sure that we don't buy toys with small parts.  Yet many are not aware about the risk of lithium button batteries hidden inside innocent-looking household objects.  Last year, more than 3,400 button batteries were swallowed.  I had no idea until I watched The Battery Controlled's video how many hidden dangers are lurking in my home in the form of lithium button batteries.  These coin-size batteries might be found in mini remote controls, small calculators, watches, key fobs, flameless candles, singing greeting cards and other electronics.

This definitely is an issue because my children Peter and Liberty both have had a tendency to put things in their mouths.  In fact, last year when Peter had just turned three years old he swallowed a quarter!  Now Peter has pretty much outgrown that habit but Liberty is only two and loves putting things like her hair barrettes into her mouth.  Now that I am aware of the risk, I am committed to protecting my children from gaining access to the button batteries in our home.

For more information about coin lithium button batteries, you can view The Battery Controlled's video.  You can also read more on The Battery Controlled website and take a pledge to prevent swallowing coin lithium button batteries.

  1. I just saw a story on the news about this less than ten minutes ago. This is something parents do need to be made aware of.
