Walmart Coupon Policy Clarification

This week's Walmart ad created quite a stir in the couponing world with a statement printed on the front page which implied that they would now accept competitor's coupons:

We'll match the price of any local competitor's printed ad or coupon for an identical product.

Walmart's Facebook page has elaborated on their coupon acceptance policy:
"To clarify, Walmart will continue to accept all valid manufacturer and print-at-home internet coupons with a scannable bar code. In addition, Walmart will also match the price listed on any valid competitor coupons that include a printed retail price for a specific item (e.g., $2 for a 24 oz. bottle of Clorox). We do not accept coupons that are $X off a product ( e.g., $1 of a 24 oz bottle of Clorox)."
Walgreens frequently has in-ad coupons advertising a specific retail price, rather than a dollar off amount, so it would appear that we can now bring these into Walmart to get a price match.  However, at this point Walmart's Coupon Policy has not been updated to reflect that they will accept competitor's retail price coupons.  And since Walmart's policy does state that only one coupon will be accepted per item, there may be issues with attempting to use a manufacturer's coupon on top of a Walgreens coupon price - although the Walgreens coupon would probably be entered as a price adjustment since it can't be scanned as a coupon.

Also Paul from I Heart the Mart reports that he spoke with a Walmart PR rep and learned that Walmart will accept Catalina coupons (coupons that print at the register) from other stores as long as the words "manufacturer's coupon" appears on the coupon.  Stores like Walgreens, Schnucks, and Buy Low print Catalina coupons.  This is not reflected in Walmart's current Coupon Policy.

Please comment if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer!

  1. wow, that all seems a mess. I used to work there, and even to this day my local wal-mart can't get their stuff together. Cashiers are ignorant of the ACTUAL price match policy and the coupon policy and the CSMS aren't sure so they turn to their asst. manager who can't be found... blah! Too bad wal-mart is the only store in my town...
